Prevalência de anticorpos para o vÃrus da hepatite A em duas populações de diferente nÃvel sócio-econômico de São Paulo, Brasil
To evaluate the prevalence of antibody against hepatitis A in two socioeconomically distinct populations of a developing country, 540 serum specimens from children and adults living in São Paulo, Brazil, were tested for IgG anti HAV by a commercial radioimunoassay (Havab, Abbott Laboratories). The prevalence of anti-HAV in low socioeconomic level subjects was 75.0% in children 2-11 years old and 100.0% in adults, whereas in middle socioeconomic level significantly lower prevalences were observed (40.3% in chidren 2-11 years old and 91.9% in adults). Voluntary blood donors of middle socioeconomic level showed a prevalence of 90.4%. These data suggest that hepatitis A infection remains a highly endemic disease in São Paulo, Brazil.Para avaliar a prevalência de anticorpos para o vÃrus da hepatite A em um paÃs em desenvolvimento, os Autores analisaram 540 amostras de soro de crianças e adultos colhidas em São Paulo, pertencente a duas populações distintas sota o ponto de vista socio-econômico. Os anticorpos IgG anti-VHA foram testados através de radioimunoensaio disponÃvel comercialmente (Havata, Laboratorios Abbott). A prevalência de anticorpos IgG anti-HVA no grupo de baixo nÃvel socioeconómico foi de 75,0% em crianças de 2-11 anos e 100,0% nos adultos, enquanto que no grupo de nÃvel socioeconómico médio observaram-se prevalências acentuadamente mais baixas (40,3% nas crianças de 2 a 11 anos e 91,9% nos adultos). Doadores de sangue voluntários, de nÃvel sócio-econômico médio, apresentaram prevalência de anticorpos de 90,4°/o. Estes achados sugerem que a infecção pelo vÃrus da hepatite A continua sendo uma infecção altamente endêmica em São Paulo, Brasil
Susceptibility Inhomogeneity and Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2
Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin rotation (\muSR) experiments have been
carried out to study the effect of structural disorder on the non-Fermi-liquid
(NFL) behavior of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2. Analysis
of the bulk susceptibility in the framework of disorder-driven Griffiths-phase
and Kondo-disorder models for NFL behavior yields relatively narrow
distributions of characteristic spin fluctuation energies, in agreement with
\muSR linewidths that give the inhomogeneous spread in susceptibility. \muSR
and NMR data both indicate that disorder explains the "nearly NFL" behavior
observed above \sim2 K, but does not dominate the NFL physics found at low

Atomic mass dependence of \Xi^- and \overline{\Xi}^+ production in central 250 GeV \pi^- nucleon interactions
We present the first measurement of the atomic mass dependence of central
\Xi^- and \overline{\Xi}^+ production. It is measured using a sample of 22,459
\Xi^-'s and \overline{\Xi}^+'s produced in collisions between a 250 GeV \pi^-
beam and targets of beryllium, aluminum, copper, and tungsten. The relative
cross sections are fit to the two parameter function \sigma_0 A^\alpha, where A
is the atomic mass. We measure \alpha = 0.924+-0.020+-0.025, for Feynman-x in
the range -0.09 < x_F < 0.15.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Fermilab E791
Fermilab E791, a very high statistics charm particle experiment, recently
completed its data taking at Fermilab's Tagged Photon Laboratory. Over 20
billion events were recorded through a loose transverse energy trigger and
written to 8mm tape in the the 1991-92 fixed target run at Fermilab. This
unprecedented data sample containing charm is being analysed on many-thousand
MIP RISC computing farms set up at sites in the collaboration. A glimpse of the
data taking and analysis effort is presented. We also show some preliminary
results for common charm decay modes. Our present analysis indicates a very
rich yield of over 200K reconstructed charm decays.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, LaTe
Dalitz Plot Analysis of the Decay D^+ --> K^- pi^+ pi^+ and Indication of a Low-Mass Scalar K pi Resonance
We study the Dalitz plot of the decay D^+ --> K^- pi^+ pi^+ with a sample of
15090 events from Fermilab experiment E791. Modeling the decay amplitude as the
coherent sum of known K pi resonances and a uniform nonresonant term, we do not
obtain an acceptable fit. If we allow the mass and width of the K^*_0(1430) to
float, we obtain values consistent with those from PDG but the chi^2 per degree
of freedom of the fit is still unsatisfactory. A good fit is found when we
allow for the presence of an additional scalar resonance, with mass 797 +/- 19
+/- 43 MeV/c^2 and width 410 +/- 43 +/- 87 MeV/c^2. The mass and width of the
K^*_0(1430) become 1459 +/- 7 +/- 5 MeV/c^2 and 175 +/- 12 +/- 12 MeV/c^2,
respectively. Our results provide new information on the scalar sector in
